EAZA Campaigns

The EAZA European Carnivore Campaign is the eighth conservation campaign organised by EAZA. The EAZA campaign tradition commenced in 2000 with the Bushmeat Campaign. This campaign aimed at raising awareness of the bushmeat problem and collect signatures to place the bushmeat issue on the EU political agenda. At the end of the campaign, millions of visitors had been informed of the bushmeat problem and almost 2 million signatures were collected.

After this initial success, campaigns were organised annually. During this period, the campaigns evolved into their current shape. Today the focus of EAZA campaigns is still on raising awareness, but education and raising funds for in situ conservation projects have been added as targets. Education and awareness activities have reached a large part of the 125 million visitors that EAZA member institutions welcome every year. Together, the campaigns have raised over 3 million euro, which has directly supported conservation projects in the field.

In recent years the campaigns have also aimed at strengthening bonds between EAZA and other (conservation) organisations. Nowadays, a strong partner is often involved in the campaigns. The previous campaign (EAZA Amphibian Campaign) was organised world-wide in cooperation with WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and Amphibian Ark. For the European Carnivore Campaign, several partners have been found as well (see 'Who are we').

Building on the success of the previous campaigns, we hope that the EAZA European Carnivore Campaign will be a major support for conservation of European nature: financially as well as education and raising awareness.
