Project overview

The Iberian Lynx Ex-situ Conservation Programme (Spain)

The present situation of the project is that there are 77 (38.39) lynxes, 19 at El Acebuche (Doñana), 4 at Jerez zoo, 16 at Silves (new centre in Portugal) and 38 at La Olivilla (Sierra Morena). 45 of them are completely healthy, including 10 cubs that were raised this year. Thirteen lynxes got Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in stage 1 but should be okay in the future. Eight lynxes got stage 2 of CKD and unfortunately 10 animals developed the disease in the highest level (stage 3) and that will therefore die soon. Seven animals were lost this year mostly because of the disease. Fortunately the origin of the disease was identified - it was an imported mineral supplement with an incorrect composition which was given to the animals in the two biggest centers (El Acebuche and La Olivilla). In January the supplement was stopped and there are no further new cases. The lynxes with low levels of CKD are improving. Due to the disease the breeding programme had to be restructured the animals with stage 2 and 3 could not be included in the next breeding season.

The EAZA European Carnivore Campaign donation has been used to improve the video surveillance systems mainly at El Acebuche Centre, in Doñana and at Jerez zoo. At Jerez Zoo a second unit for Iberian lynx (2.2 lynxes are kept with one couple in each unit) was built. Thanks to the EAZA donation the animals are now monitored!
