Project overview

Antidote campaign and reduction of threats of wolves and bears by human intervention based on poison (Bulgaria)

The compensation programme of the Fund for Wild Flora & Fauna (FWFF, Bulgaria) aimed at farmers that have suffered predator attacks on their livestock is in an advancing phase. After the release of 15 griffon vultures in Kresna Gorge, the FWFF team is very actively following cases of predated livestock.

The following actions have been taken:

  • Case of predation is carefully investigated on site;
  • Carcasses are collected to prevent using them as bait for poisoning;
  • Deposing carcasses at the vulture feeding site;
  • Owners of depredated livestock is invited to visit the feeding site and the acclimatization aviary for vultures;
  • Farmers are offered guarding dog and/or herd insurance;
  • FWFF provides guarding dogs, sheep, goats, and also compensate affected farmers by paying the first year insurance.

All this leads to a reduced conflict between man and carnivores and benefits both. Until now around 40 cases have been reported and almost all have been compensated and guarding systems have improved with the support of FWFF.
